Frower - Tulip

My boss gave us all a Tulip the other day.
Yes, one tulip...
Her husband just bought it from Holland

Look at the color graduation!
So pwetty..
But alas... it was short lived.
Being a real frower....

It withered soon
Without connection to the soil
Forgotten
Unable to reproduce

Lonely tulip....
Joining its brothers and sisters...
In the trash.

Sigh...

Bintan - Diving

I've never been to Bintan before and with Tioman being crowded over the weekend (think it's because it's the last weekend before the Chinese 7th Month Festival, everyone wanna go diving before the 1 mth hiatus), it seems like a good idea to go there.

Besides, my friends are used to the hospitality of Indonesians and thought it would be great to go back and "enjoy" it again. :P

Despite the super early morning (waking up at the ungodly hour of 4.30am) to catch my fren's car and going down to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, we were all in good spirits and even enjoyed a nice little breakfast before meeting with the rest of the group travelling there as well.

There was 29 of us! with 3 DMs, and 1 instructor as there were 7 OWDs
The OWDs were going to do shore dives. The 12 other divers (look really professional with the equipments and stuff) were in 1 group and then there were the 5 of us plus 1 guy whose friends are doing the OWD.

Bintan Agro resort was nice. It surpasses the resort facilities of the Tioman's resorts that I have stayed in so far. They have 2!! swimming pools, nice breakfast spread, restaurant on kelong, pool tables (at a fee, of cos), lobby wifi access and nice beds (comparing to Tioman's resorts).

The water at Bintan is.... bad.... Low vis... about 2-5m? slight current underwater, strong current on water.
We did not even bother to bring our cameras down with us.
I think our guides were seriously pleased that they do not have to wait for us to "capture the right shot". LOL! However, I think they also ran out of places to show us cos we circled around the same area twice before finally surfacing. All rather shallow dives, about 12m, and each dive lasting about 35mins to 45mins only with lots of air left in our tanks.

Cold bottled water was presented to us after each dive.
The boatmen are helpful and will help us in rigging up or derigging if they see that we have a problem with it.
Backrolls are required although you can opt for Giant Stride entries too.

We saw a Giant Grouper, 2 Blue Spotted Stingrays, 2 Huge Puffer Fishes, trapped in the fish cages with no way of escaping. My friend tried to pull it up but couldn't.
I saw a small moray eel hiding shyly in a crevice
A nudibranch flipped over in front of us before continuing on its slow journey.
Butterfly fishes? and some small blue black long fishes, and clown fishes were seen (I'm bad with the names of fishes)

I had difficulty in equalizing (pain in my ears), as usual, and my dive com died on the first dive. Well, out of battery to be exact. So did another 2 friends cos we bought our coms about the same timing. Oops!!  Had to depend on the DM and another friend for that.

I puked after the first dive. I was already suffering from Jaw soreness for almost 2 mths and slight nauseousness. I think all these plus the strong current on water contributed to the puking.

I aborted the 2nd dive.

The next day, I tried again
And I puked...

So I aborted the 2nd dive too..

Otherwise, nice trip, nice scenery, more relaxing than Tioman, no need to carry gear bags, time to nap on the 2nd day before our departure, funny DM, and I think a good instructor for the OWDs. All in all, a good trip. However, I do not think any of us would go back to Bintan to dive again.

Cock-ups...

  1. However, some cockups such waiting a long time for plain water to be served at lunch despite us being not the last table to arrived. In fact, we were the last table to be served. Thereafter delivering our avocado drinks to another table and we had to wait 30mins to 1 hr for it to be finally delivered to our table with lots of sorry from the waitress, and the explanation that the waiter didn't know, the other table beckoned him over and he just pass the drinks over to them. But we asked them a few times for our drinks already and yet this happened?!
  2. Going back 3 times for my pancake during breakfast and having my friend being served her pancake first despite her ordering later then me, with the icing being that I was asked twice as to the ingredients I want on my pancake! They said they will deliver the pancake to me later but I rather stand and wait there then. Their service seriously pales in comparison to what I experienced in Bali and Sipadan.
  3. We asked for a shuttle service to town and were told that the drivers are all away and we have to wait an hour for a driver. =/
  4. We asked for massage service and were told that there were only 4 masseurs. The lady whom we asked to help us book, did not come back to us that the timing we wanted were unavailable.

There are other activities there which looked like FUN!
Like Kite surfing, banana boat, and another inflated boat thing.
Perhaps the next time, we can go back to try the other activities, rather than diving.

Extra food that we ate:
Durians at 30k rupiah per kg. Sweet and nice! for the lunch. But it was hard and dry for the dinner as those are fresh durians that just dropped and was not allowed time to ripen.
Cheap and delicious Otah! abit small, but really cheap. I heard it was about SGD $0.05? - SGD $0.10 per stick. We can't find it at this price anymore.
Goreng Ayam
Deep fried popiahs
Avocado drinks at 27k rupiah
Ice cream!!! - Magnums at about 24k - 26k rupiah depending on the flavour. I tried a new one Pink Pomegranate which is quite nice. Paddle pops were like less than 10k rupiah.

Saw fireworks selling at 250k to 1,200k rupiahs. Something which is banned in Singapore but you can play with it in Bintan. Perhaps can try this the next time as well.

Guess I really need to resolve the issue of my jaws before I go anywhere else... oh well.
Appointment with dentist - booked!

Sisters / Bridesmaid

So I'm asked to be a sister again
I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked.

I mean... I guess / think I could probably count if I was asked / tasked to
But I can't be bothered anymore...

I'm suddenly reminded of this film
27 Dresses starring Katherine Heig1

The story tells of Jane who has been a bridesmaid and a planner for her friends' wedding for 27 times and on one occasion, met this writer who wrote about her in his column in a paper. Click on the 27 Dresses link for more information on the show...

Well... I haven't been a sister for 27 times
I haven't needed to plan any weddings
I was never asked to or given a dress by the brides.
We usually need to source for our own or keep to a certain color or theme...
But I have been a sister for many many times...

I can empathize with this...

Currency Diff & Gifts for Little Gals

So the other day, we had a family luncheon (as usual) to celebrate one of my nieces birthday.
Asked the bro on what presents the niece would like

Clothes? - out - they have lots of clothes
soft toy? - out - they have lots of soft toys
Jigsaw puzzle? - out - they have lots of jigsaw puzzles, all kept in the storeroom as there's no place to hang

Kids... nowadays.... are so lucky....

I didn't even have a barbie doll nor played with one when I was young.
I had to ask for toys and most of the time, it was a "no"
I had hand-me-down clothes when young, from my bros... and i got no sisters...
I had new clothes during the Chinese New Year, more likely...

So anyway, their latest interest is in legos.
Which is most kids' interest recently....
Asked the bro on which ones they like
And the task fell on me to search

It's nieces, by the way, as according to the bro, it is not nice to give presents to one while the other had to wait a few more months for hers
oooook......

Took pictures at the shops
Sent to the bro for approval...
Ended up with "wait! Let me check with the gals first!"  0.0
and "what's the budget?"

There goes the surprise!
Oh well... better to get something they like rather than not, right?
So I waited...

They came up with a list
5 choices each
and their top choice....
was about or over usd100     0.0
And the choices were slightly different from what the bro said. lol!

Me to the bro
"hallo?! it's sgd100, not usd100! how did they came up with this list?!"
bro "dun know. they search for it themselves. Just go with their secondary choices then"
they are good......
usd100..... hmm......

I gave him 2 combination of choices
He came back with another one....
One $98, one $102 choice.... 0.0
Bro : "Get the $102 choice and I will pay for the $2 extra"   0.0

ok loh....

End of story....

I didn't get the $2...
The nieces are happily playing with their gifts now..

Umbrella umbrella... under the umbrella!

Raining!
Good for sleeping in!
Alas! We have to get to work....
So out comes the umbrellas, raincoats, rainboots etc.

However the umbrellas can be used for other purpose rather than just shelter from the rain.
They shelter you from the sun
They provide you with self-protection (just swing it at the other person)
They block people from you.......

They are not used to block the passage way of other passengers trying to get onto the bus!
Wetness.... =/
And the person who did it was not apologetic at all.
Lousy...

Close the umbrella before boarding the bus or simply, just run up without opening your umbrella!!
You just made all the people behind you... wet.... from the rain... just cos u did not close your umbrella in time / have difficulty closing it, and use it to block the entire entrance of the bus.... =/

And another person brought the whole umbrella, opened, onto the bus and then close it in the bus, raining droplets on the other passengers already on it.
No apologies as well..

It is not your right.
You should just apologise for inconveniencing others.
What has the world gone to!?
Sigh.....

First Dive...

The hands go clammy
IBS (irritable Bowel syndrome) started
Feeling of coldness and shivers while above or in the water
The excitement

It never really goes away...

I still feel the tenseness and excitement
I still get the shivers at times

I still need to take the anti-nausea pills

I still need time to equalize...

Overheard on the lorry ride to the site a few years ago....
"Oh! You have 15 dives? That's a lot! Where have you dive at? So experienced!"
And i was just sitting there, silently... amused even... listening to the conversation between 2 foreigners, the only Asian among the group. I was there alone... doing my dives with a foreign guide who seems more excited at seeing a lionfish than me. I started to think.. I'm doing my 30th over dives and I still feel nervous and inexperienced. You can never be that "experienced" or too "experienced" at a sport which depends on your equipment as well as nature.

The guides probably have thousands of dives under their belt....
And accidents still happen...

Never be too assured
Always take the necessary checks
Always remember your first dive
Always take precautions

Must remember to pack my anti-nausea pills for my next trip...
